How to Design a Personalized Nautical Itinerary from Scratch

In short

  • Start with the kind of day you want: calm or active, intimate or social.
  • Choose the boat to fit the plan, not the other way round.
  • Two or three good stops beat five against the clock.
  • Timing changes everything: morning, midday or sunset.
  • We sail from Marina Port Vell, in central Barcelona.

A day on the water off Barcelona doesn’t have to mean a fixed route and a fixed schedule. A tailor-made itinerary starts from a single question: what kind of day do you actually want? Everything else follows from that — departure time, coves, swim stops, and what’s served on board.

At Sondevela we set sail from Marina Port Vell, right in the heart of the city, and we build every trip together with our guests. Here’s how we do it, so you arrive with a clear idea in mind.

Every trip starts at Marina Port Vell, ten minutes from central Barcelona.

1. Start with the day, not the route

Before looking at any map, decide on the feeling you’re after. It shapes every other choice.

Stillness or action

Some people want to anchor in a quiet cove, cut the engine and do absolutely nothing for three hours. Others want paddleboarding, snorkelling and a swim at every stop. Both work — but they don’t fit in the same itinerary. One needs time standing still; the other needs to keep moving.

Intimate or social

A sunset trip for two and a celebration with twelve friends are planned differently: the pace, the music, the catering and even the anchoring spot change. Settle this early and the rest falls into place.

The most common mistake isn’t picking the wrong route — it’s trying to fit two different days into one.

2. Pick the boat that fits the plan

The boat isn’t just a style choice. It determines how many people fit comfortably, how much the sea is felt, and how much room there is to stretch out.

The bow net: the most contested spot on board.
  • Catamaran: two hulls, exceptional stability and a wide bow net for sunbathing. The most comfortable option for groups — and for anyone prone to seasickness.
  • Sailing yacht: more heel, more of a real sailing feel. Perfect if you want to sail, not simply be on the water.
  • Motor boat: more speed and range, if you want to get further in less time.

Anchored in a cove in the Garraf, south of the city.

Coves and anchorages

North lies the Maresme coastline; south, the Garraf area and Sitges, with clear water and far less traffic. The final call depends on the day’s wind, which the skipper assesses that same morning.

The skyline from the water

A short stop off the port to take in Montjuïc, the Mapfre tower and Barceloneta from the sea. It’s the view nobody else has, and the one that always ends up in the photos.

What you do on board

Snorkelling, paddleboarding, swimming — or simply waiting for the sun to drop below the horizon with a drink in hand. There’s no need to fill every hour: two well-placed activities beat five against the clock.

4. Get the timing right

The time of day changes the experience entirely:

Time slot What it’s like Best for
Morning Flatter sea, fewer boats Swimming, snorkelling, families
Midday Full sun and a long anchor stop Groups, food on board
Sunset Warm light, lit-up skyline Couples, celebrations, photos

The sunset cruise is the most requested trip of the summer — book well ahead.

Our professional skippers handle the route, the permits and all maritime regulations. You just choose what time you want to be in the water.

5. Personalize life on board

The details are what turn a boat trip into your boat trip:

  • Catering, tapas or a custom menu.
  • Cava, wine or a full drinks bar.
  • Your own playlist through the sound system.
  • Decoration for birthdays, proposals or corporate events.
  • A professional photographer on board.

Everything ready before you step aboard.

Why a custom itinerary is worth it

  • Freedom: the route adapts to you, not the other way round.
  • Your own pace: no shared schedules, no strangers on board.
  • Comfort: everything ready before you step aboard.
  • Safety: a professional skipper and a fully checked vessel.

Experience the Mediterranean your way

A great itinerary isn’t the one that packs in the most — it’s the one that matches the day you had in your head. Tell us what you’re picturing and we’ll build it with you, mile by mile.
